About me

(Video filmed in 2015)

Much of my art combines images, conversations, feelings, memories into visual narratives that simultaneously explore ideas of the familiar and the mysterious. While my paintings may appear surreal, I am not simply looking to relate dream and reality, but rather to develop my imagery into experiences that are more fundamental and universal, and that others can relate to. If I were to compare my approach to another contemporary artist, I might point out Enrique Martinez Celaya, whose work examines the individual experience addressing familiar subjects (nature, boy, girl, birds, animals) but explores what lies beneath appearances, the complexities and mysteries of individual experience. But at the same time, my work is more experiential in nature and a response more to life's complexities than anything else.

Over the past ten years, my painting has involved reconnecting to childhood, being able to see the world with nothing but curiosity and wonder. The main inspiration for this is that at one point in my life I lost contact with childhood. The home where I grew up in rural Romania burned, destroying everything-- our clothes, our photos, my artwork, our books, toys, everything. As an artist, essentially reconstructing my life as if through the eyes of a child has made everything become fantastic, and gives me the opportunity to share my enthusiasm with others. Changing the way I look at things continues to be part of my process and is an ongoing theme in my art.

In my recent work, I have begun to surrender control of the surface and the details of the story. My focus now is more concerned with finding a balance between incident and intention. My images begin as unpredictable and unstable, almost random, but at a certain point, messages and emotions begin to surface, what I see as connections between past and present. The story opens as I begin each work, and progressively matures over time. A new eye, a different light, a feeling, an image, a conversation can change everything.

I want to create more immersive works, and not just visual products, but works that become more like encounters or occurrences. I’m interested in delving into how layered abstractions, unpredictable forms and intuitive marks inform discoveries. I still want to keep some of that child’s perspective and revel in the freshness of colors and approach the new medias, but at the same time, begin to combine media in innovative and less conventional ways, with much the same enthusiasm a child have when trying new things.
